What to know before planning a water birth

What is a water birth?: Laboring, delivering, or both in a tub or pool of warm water. Many parents describe the water as easing the intensity of contractions. The distinction matters when you call around: plenty of facilities offer tubs for labor but ask you to leave the water for the delivery itself, while others support delivering in the tub. Neither is "standard" — it's a facility-by-facility policy, so ask specifically which one a facility means when it says "water birth."
Where can I have one?: Freestanding birth centers are the most common setting — many are built around tubs in every birthing room. Some hospital maternity units offer labor tubs, and some home-birth midwife practices bring a portable birthing pool to you. The tags on this page come from each facility's own website and reviews, not from us, so confirm current tub availability directly — equipment and policies change.
Can anyone have a water birth?: No — every facility has eligibility criteria, and water birth is generally offered for low-risk pregnancies. What counts as low-risk varies by facility and can change over the course of a pregnancy. Whether water birth is a reasonable option for you is a conversation for your midwife or doctor, not a website; this directory only tells you which facilities to ask.
What should I ask a facility?: Five useful questions: Do you support delivering in the water, or laboring in it only? Is there a tub in every room, or could it be in use when I arrive? What are your eligibility criteria, and what would rule it out during labor? What happens if plans change mid-labor? And is water birth covered the same way as any other birth under my insurance? A facility that offers water birth regularly will have quick, concrete answers.
Does insurance cover it?: Coverage depends on your plan and the facility, not on the tub — but billing practices differ, especially between hospitals and freestanding birth centers. Verify your coverage directly with the facility and your insurer before you book, and get any estimates in writing.
